Kayak Chicago at your own pace, and choose your own path through the steel and concrete canyons of this beautiful city. Renting kayaks by the hour is a great way to take in the visual pleasures offered in the downtown area on the river.
Wonderfully close to the heart of downtown Chicago from our dock at 500 North Kingsbury St (Kinzie St. Bridge/East Bank Club) and just minutes paddling from the main attractions, Wateriders offers the best urban kayaking experience in the city, at the best rates.
Don’t waste time and energy paddling from far North to where the action is! Renting a kayak with us provides the easiest way to experience the beautiful Chicago river: no hauling a kayak from home, no clean up after your excursion — just pure kayaking fun!
Wateriders rents a variety of single and double kayaks, all of which are expertly and lovingly maintained. We give you a lesson on how to correctly paddle, how to stay safe on the river, and then get you set up comfortably in your boat for your ride.
You can always rent without a reservation during operational hours; feel free to drop in or call ahead, (312) 953-9287. However, we strongly suggest reservations to ensure you will get out on the water at the time you want.
HOURLY KAYAK RENTALS
Get ready to paddle! Kayak past a forest of significant buildings as you make your way through the downtown area of the city. Float under bridges, historical landmarks, and watch as hordes of people congregate on the brand new riverwalk! There is nothing like experiencing the Second City from the peaceful platform of a sea kayak.
Kayaks can be rented with no prior experience; however, all participants, regardless of background, must pass a competency test in order to be allowed to paddle unsupervised on the river. Passing this test is up to the discretion of the instructor. We will provide instructions for paddling onsite, and will work with you to help you improve enough to pass the test. Refunds will be given if we determine that you cannot safely explore the river.
We want you to be able to enjoy the river as much as we do, but we are not the the only boaters that use the waterways, and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the river is safe for all operators. In addition, kayaks are the most vulnerable watercraft on the Chicago River, and we want to keep everyone as safe as possible.
For these reasons, we insist that all renters paddle exclusively along the RIGHT riverwall when on the river (imagine a bike lane). In the event that you need to cross the river, look both ways and paddle quickly and directly across. Also important is that all kayaks yield to all larger boats or groups of boats as well as take direction from crew members, as many are on a schedule. Finally, we ask that you be diligent in keeping track of your surroundings, and be ready to move when necessary. The river is very much like a busy street; exciting, dynamic, and fun, while at the same time potentially dangerous if one closes their eyes and wanders around in the middle.
